The transcripts of the trial of Charles Taylor, former President of Liberia. More…

What we see here, Mr Conteh, is an interview conducted by way of questions and answers with you dated 20 June 2007 and let us just read through the first page, shall we, in order to put this in context:

"Q. Mr Paul Conteh, I would like to talk about the

testimony you gave at the Special Court for Sierra Leone on

8 April 2005. Do you recall giving that testimony?

A. Yes, I recall.

Q. I am going to read to you part of your testimony" - and this quote is taken from your testimony:

"From there we went towards Kola Tree and often passing

through the cemetery road. So they started giving me some

beating, so I should not turn back. One beat me at my

back. When I passed the cemetery, I saw a corpse or bodies

anyway. I saw one fresh one who I think was newly killed.

Other bodies were along the cemetery area. I saw about

four bodies. They were all in civilian clothes.

Q. Do you remember making this statement?

A. Yes, I do.

Q. Tell me about the injuries you witnessed on the dead

bodies?

A. I saw gunshot wounds, they were killed by bullets.

They also used cutlass, also they used a special kind of

knife.

Q. Tell me about the gunshot wounds?

A. I knew they were gunshot wounds because I could see the

bullet hole in the skin. I saw some wounds on the back,

the victims were face down on the ground. I also saw some

bodies lying with their backs on the ground and their hands

were up in the air. I saw four bodies.

Q. Did the body lying on the front was shot from behind,

did you see this person get shot?

A. No, no.

Q. Did you hear about how this person was shot, or who was

responsible?

A. The boys who were escorting me told me that if you try

to escape that is what is going to happen to you. Corporal

Bastard said this to me."

Now, pause there. The reason why I want to deal with this passage is I seek some clarification. The question you were asked was: "Did you hear about how this person was shot, or who was responsible?" The answer you gave was: "The boys who were escorting me told me that if you try to escape that is what is going to happen to you." My question is: Do you know who shot those people whose bodies you saw by cemetery road?
